The “Engineering Mathematics and Computing Lab” (EMCL), directed by Prof. Dr. Vincent Heuveline, is a center dedicated to interdisciplinary research activities with focus on technology transfer in the domains of scientific computing, numerical optimization, high-performance computing, cloud computing and related topics. Within the Computing Lab each project is usually an interdisciplinary collaboration that brings together the expertise of at least two research institutes or a research institute and an industrial partner, with the aim of solving problems of practical relevance.

Additionally, the “Incubator Group” of the EMCL experiments with ideas and products which are in the early stages of development. It gives excellent students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest technologies, and prepares a new generation of best trained and skilled scientists.

Brazilian President Meets EMCL-Students at CeBIT

On March 5, the Brazilian president Dilma Roussef met Brazilian scientists and students in Germany. Two of them are supervised by Dr. Mathias J. Krause, head of the Computing Lab for Medical Engineering.

Dialects of climate research

The knowledge acquisition process moves discursively between natural, formal and visual languages. In each language level, different "dialects" represent the climate model. An efficient process of translation between languages and dialects will remain the information content of what is represented.
On 20 March 2012 a first workshop was held at DKRZ with participation of EMCL.

Parallel computing with the neighbours

The Engineering Mathematics and Computing Lab (EMCL) offered a joint block lecture on parallel computing in the context of real-world applications for German and French students in the week from 13th to 17th February 2012 .

The EMCL supported start-up "PocketTaxi" of former KIT students has been awarded "Übermorgenmacher" by the state of Baden-Württemberg for their innovative way of commitment to a better future of the state.

Cooperation of EMCL and MAB successful in idea competition

The contribution “Model based cause of error diagnostics for liquid chromatographic applications” by EMCL and MAB has been awarded in the result presentation of the “Idea Competition in Biotechnology and Medical Technology”.

Nvidia Cuda Research Center status extended

As a result of the successful work in 2010/2011, the EMCL has been awarded Cuda Research Center for the 2012 academic year. This enables to continue the successful research cooperation with academic partners and Nvidia on scientific GPU computing.

On the Way to the Wing Car

In the context of the student design competition "Formula Student" the Hochschulgruppe KA-RaceIng in cooperation with the Engineering Mathematics and Computing Lab (EMCL) is developing an aerodynamics package for the new racing car of the KIT.

Paper Award at INFOCOMP2011
